"Don't Doubt Me"

This is a favorite saying of the supremely confident talk-show host, Rush Limbaugh. When strange events are unfolding that are confusing to understand, Rush will make a prediction about what will happen in the future. When he does, it sounds very unlikely that it could happen. He then adds, "Don't doubt me." Often his staff is incredulous about the prediction and lets him know. For instance: just before the presidential election, there were many people that said if Obama was elected it would be the end of racial strife. It would usher in a new, higher level in race relations. After all, it would take many whites to elect him since blacks are only 12% of the population, therefore, blacks, recognizing this, would know that whites are not antagonistic toward them. Rush's prediction at the time was that it would make race relations worse rather than improve. His staff laughed at how wrong he was. Of course he added: "Don't doubt me." Today, every criticism of Obama yields the epithet of "Racist." Don't like one of his programs, you are racist. Point out his gaffs, you are racist. Catch him in a lie, you are racist. Make fun of him, you are a double racist. How could he know this would happen?

  • First, I don't remember anyone (perhaps outside of Fox News) saying that electing a black president would end racial strife. Just because the majority of americans believe that race should not matter doesn't mean the racist cease to exist. So predicting that wouldn't happen is not very impressive.

And, I haven't heard anyone seriously claiming that anyone who criticizes the president is racist. That is just silly and I am sure it is something that Rush would love to be happening but it just isn't.

Now holding up a sign that says jigaboo with a picture of Obama is racist. Holding up the confederate flag while screaming "take our country back" is racist. Are these the majority of the people who oppose Obama? No. Do they get a lot of press? You betcha. The conservatives should shut them down and tell them it is not acceptable to attack someone based on race.

People criticize Obama, people criticized Bush, and people will criticize the next president. I have no problem with disagreements based on policy. But, personal attacks based on race, sexual orientation, size, gender, etc. should not be taken seriously by anyone.

  • Erika,

You may have missed my comment about many whites voting for Obama. Why did they vote for him? (The University environment is not the place to find out why whites voted in overwhelming numbers for Obama.) Many were just tired of all this racial strife and wanted it to stop. Many voted for the stopping by voting for him --- to show this is not a racist nation. Surprise for them, the calls of racism have increased. If you would like an example: Janine Garofalo, shortly after the election, upon hearing some whites criticising Obama, commented: "This is racism straight up." It was widely quoted by all news agencies. Another example: Reports on the Tea Parties indicated they were all racist for demonstrating against the Obama government. There are many others but the mainstream media do not cover it as well as Fox News so you may not know the whole truth.

Now, many whites are having buyers remorse and are no longer supporting Obama, but now they are called racist. However, I have two black friends that voted for Obama because he is black, they have not changed their minds.

  • Anyone who voted for Obama because he is black is a fool. Anyone who thought voting for a black president would prove that they weren't a racist, is a racist.

I am really glad that I do not watch the same news shows you do.

  • Why did whites vote for Obama? Sorry, but only Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck think that whites voted for Obama to prove that they aren't racist. That is absolute nonsense.

Whites voted for Obama because he believes in the things they believe in. He will pass the things (like heath care reform) that they want passed.

The people who are truly racist are pretty pissed off that we elected a black president. So of course racism has gone up. So, again, Rush making the prediction this is not that impressive.
