Textting

I read the other day that a 15-year old girl had sent and received over 6,000 text messages in a month on her cell phone. That works out to about 200 per day. When asked about it she said, "I would die without it." Assuming she is mentally stable, what can account for this need for constant contact with someone else? Can she do this in school? If so, can she really learn anything when turning away from class instruction? In my estimation, she has a personality disorder that is in immediate need of counseling. It represents a disregard for those that surround her during the day. On second thought she may make a good telephone operator with her ability to handle so many non face-to-face interactions. Could be a good thing.

  • Yes, but they have no social skills and do not know how to talk with real people (face to face). This would also make it very weird for a job interview. Unless you are deaf and dumb I do not understand the reason for texting. Telephone operators no longer exist when you have to dial cinco for espaniol.

  • Tracy and Amber text a lot and I think they have social skills. Not all texting people are unsocial.

  • I do like to text in certain situations. You can just get a quick message to someone without a complete conversation. I've seen so many times at family/social gatherings one person have to remove themselves for a good amount of time to talk on the phone just to give someone a list of what to pick up from the store on their way or how to get to the gathering. Texting allows those sort of messages to take WAY less time b/c with the phone calls there is always that hi how are you and ok, well, we'll see you in a little while, drive safe....kind of thing. Ya know? What I don't get is having a full conversation over text. I just don't understand the appeal.

  • I agree with Tracy. I use text messages in appropriate moments (like when someone is sleeping next to you in a small hotel room).

But to think that the kids that use it extensively will not be able to function in society is silly. Communication is changing and it is the people that can't keep up that will be left behind. If the secretary that learned shorthand never bothered to learn how to work on a computer he or she would be out of a job right now.

I have a friend that used text messaging to let candidates know when to show up for job interviews. She specifically wanted people comfortable with technology in the job.
