Recession Benifits

She was telling me how her husband had responded when she had asked him about what they would do in retirement. There was no pension for them but they had saved some money. He told her they would invest in restaurants. Over the years, he would buy a part interest in a restaurant that was opening and eventually had over twenty investments when he died. Some had gone out of business but most were still ongoing. She told me how she had recently received a check from one of the restaurants, "Woody's Bar-B-Que," a chain in these parts. The check was for more than she received in the past. When she inquired how did this happen, (because she was expecting less due to the recession) she was told the profits were higher because of lower employee turnover. Cooks and waitresses were staying in their jobs concerned that they might not get another. Less training, more efficient food handling, less spoilage and fewer employees yielded a higher profit.

  • So there are some benefits to a recession.

  • At least, benefits for those who already have jobs...

  • Sean,
That is correct, having a job during a recession is very important. For a time, the upwardly-mobile workers must stay in their positions and wait for the job markets to open up. They become most proficient in their present positions and are more valuable to the employer.

  • Maybe it's just me but I fail to see anything in this post that suggest the recession has any "benefits for those that already have jobs". Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the point that some BUSINESSES are benefiting financially because their employees are opting for the relative stability of their current jobs rather than the uncertainty of jumping to a different job even though it may offer better opportunity. If anything, the employees are worse off in this musing.

  • John,

You are right, the benifit went to the capitalist. There are secondary benifits for the employees because they retain a job, all the while improving their skills. They will be more marketable when the recession ends.
