Fallen Away Catholics

There is a push being made in our Church to appeal to fallen away Catholics to return. There are various reasons for people to fall away and some are legitimate. The scandal involving priests and young boys is an example. The change in litergy is another. When these things happen it is natural to feel disaffected. It is also natural to feel the loss of religiosity in ones life. Once fallen away, does that mean there can never be a reconciliation? How does one return if they want to? Our parish priests are asking for an opportunity to talk to those that may want to return.

I was surprised to learn that our Paster was once a fallen away Catholic. Perhaps that is why he feels that there is more that can be done for them and a reaching hand toward them can be a healing. As we all know, there is no sin that cannot be forgiven, by individuals or by institutions. A harboring resentment is detrimental to ones health and serenity. If there is an unfilled need in ones life it is well to think about how to achieve that need and take the steps get internal peace.

The Pastor, at his own expense, bought over 1,000 books "Rediscover Catholicism" by Matthew Kelly for distribution to parishioners. This book covers some important issues of our time, such as: Are you happy? Are you living an authentic life? How would you like your life to change? Is Jesus still relevant? Why have so many people rejected Catholicism? Do you really think you will find happiness where you are looking?

This is a book for intelligent, thinking people that have been hurt in life and are trying to make sense of it all. I found it helpful, chalenging, difficult, and rewarding. I am pleased that our priests are behind this.

  • Elements of the Catholic church often do things that shake my faith in the church. The pedophilia cover-up is a big one but the US church not only tolerates pro-abortionist Catholic politicians as members (such as Pelosi, Biden, Kennedy, Kerry, Durbin) they also allow Catholic Universities to host pro-abortionists speeches and EVEN award them honorary degrees as is the case with Barack Obama getting an honorary degree from Notre Dame University and Joe Biden (an avowed Catholic pro-abortionist) the “Legal Momentum Hero Award” by the Catholic Georgetown Law School in 2009. And now Georgetown last Friday invited Kathleen Sebelius, another Catholic avowed pro-abortionist, to speak at their 2012 commencement ceremony. As secretary of HHS Sebelius invoked anti religious freedom regulations. I am too often ashamed and embarrassed to admit I am a Catholic.

  • John,

Yes, I would have been pleased to have some of those people disciplined is some manner so that we could say that the Church does hold certain principles as firmly fixed. But it has not been done yet.

We can be proud of Archbishop Lori of Baltimore, who speaks for the U.S. Conference of Bishops, when he upholds religious freedom in this country. The stand against the present government attempts to control all aspects of healthcare is courageous and admirable.

  • We prefer to call ourselves "Recovering Catholics".

Also, being Pro-Choice does not make someone "Pro-Abortion". No one is out there advocating or encouraging women to have an abortion.

Until the Catholic religion recognizes ALL people as individuals and avows them the same rights in all things they will continue to lose parishioners.

  • Adrienne,

As you know, Margret Sanger did indeed advocate abortion particularly for the black race and other "undesireables". The question is: "Are there, today, people that believe Sanger was correct and desire to follow her lead?"
