Trunk Party
Today, as I passed a church on Blanding Boulevard, their markee read "Trunk Party, Saturday night 7:00 PM". A person I was with commented: "That is such a good idea I wish our church had done that." It referred to the Church sponsoring a Halloween Party in their parking lot. All cars back into their spaces in the Church lot and open their trunks. Then costumed kids go from car to car to get treats. This allows a much closer supervision of the children's activities. Masks can be worn without the concern of being hit by a car. Presumably, the parents know the people that have come into the Church lot.
Once again, there were no children going door to door in my neighborhood. Anticipating there would be none, I did not get candy for the tykes.

This happens a lot in Atlanta also. A good idea, since most of the people are parisioners.

Due to the drizzle of rain we had about 30 kids show up. I have six pounds of candy left over.

Our church does this. We couple it with the Vigil Mass for All Saints Day: Mass at 5pm followed by "Trunk or Treat" and dinner afterwards. This year the 5pm Mass was Saturday night, so that counted both for All Saints and the Sunday obligation. They ask the kids to dress up if they want, but nothing scary: saints, super heroes, pretty princesses, etc.

Sean, looks like you had a twofer at your church. What did you dress up as?

When I was younger we went "begging" yes that is what it was called, begging. When we approached a porch we called out in a sing-song voice, "Please help the poor." All other beggers did the same. I recall being uncomfortable saying it but the reward was there to be had. Berni and I covered a lot of ground by running from house to house. I considered it a boon when we would mount a porch while candy was being doled out and did not have to use that demeaning term.
