"The Great Satan"
As many of you may know the United States was called "The Great Satan" by the Ayatollah Khomeni of Iran. I was always puzzeled by this reference to our Country, what did he mean by this designation? Another person who used the term was Osama bin Laden during his missives to explain why he set up the 9/11 attack. I have recently read a translation of some of those missives and was surprised at what it means.
For the Islamic religion, Satan is a temptor who tries to get a believer to sin. What is it that the Islamists are concerned about as far as the U.S. is concerned? What they see are the Holywood Movies that glorify sex, alchohol, homosexuality, feminism and the dissolution of the family, particularly the male as the head of the family. They do not understand our divorce rate which leaves so many children with a single parent. They find absurd our placing our children in the center of family decision making. As religion is central in their lives, they find it abominable that the vast majority of our citizens do not practice religion. Also, they find our courts very lenient and prefer Sharia Law.
In attempting to protect their culture from that of the West, in this highly technological world, they desire a separate sphere for themselves. However, modern technology is exposing Muslims to the decadence of the West. We are tempting them to sin. The Mullahs are resisting this Western culture and bin Laden decided to defeat us militarily because, in his estimation, we were soft and Americans would not take casualties.
So there you have it, the changes we have seen in our society in the last 60 years has obtained for us a new name, "The Great Satan."

I agree with what you say but I believe Muslims hate the west for our freedoms, notwithstanding the decadence portrayed by Hollywood. Practicing muslims do not believe in freedom of religion or speech. That is why President Bush is wrong when he says all people want democracy and freedom. Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist. Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocratic.
Muslims believe all infidels (non-muslims) should convert to Islam or be murdered! If you don't follow Islamic law you die! There is no place for negotiation or appeasement. This is their fundamental belief not only thier extreme fanatics. Anyone that does not believe this is uninformed or in deep denial.

I agree with both of you mostly. I agree that Bush is wrong when he says that all people want democracy and freedom. People who really want democracy and freedom fight for it.
I don't want to believe that all muslims want all non-muslims to die. I would rather remain in deep denial.
I wish we could just get out of there and leave them alone.

I also don't believe all muslims want all non-muslims to die. Muslims believe all non-muslims must convert to Islam. But if they don't the Quran sanctions their killing.
I am no Quran expert but I heard a radio interview with a US muslim cleric who would not deny this.
FYI: This is what Wikipedia says about this subject. "The Qur'an's teachings on matters of war and peace have become topics of heated discussion in recent years. Some critics allege that some verses of the Qur'an in their historical and literary context sanction military action against unbelievers as a whole both during the lifetime of Muhammad and after. In response to this criticism, some Muslims argue that such verses of the Qur'an are taken out of context, and claim that when the verses are read in context it clearly appears that the Qur'an prohibits aggression, and allows fighting only in self defense.

I can personally guarantee the "all Muslims" do NOT want others to convert or die. Some Radical Islamics may feel that way. But having been in a relationship with a Muslim for 20 yrs. and raising a son with him, I can tell you, he doesn't feel that way.
Unfortunately just as some Radical Christians define passages of the Bilble to fit their personal agenda so some of those of the Islamic Faith.
Personally, being Agnostic, I am a firm believer in the separation of church and state and don't understand the running of a country based on the religion of one group. I have a post brewing here. hmmmmmm.........

Having worked with many Muslims, it is my judgement that they are hard working, capable, intelligent people. They made excellent employees while I was in Toronto and that work was demanding. At no time did I witness an attempt to obtain a conversion, or hear of one.

Nor will you. The Muslim religion, like most religions of the world, is non-proselytizing.
Their position is that you, as an infidel, are going to hell....Have a nice trip. I have racked my brain, but can not think of another major religion that, as a tenant of the church, does missionary work. Christianity seems to be it.
Marcel…..glad to see there are still a few conservatives who are willing to do outside reading and think with an open mind. I also have little use for liberals who only shout slogans and parrot ideas.
Before spck that was ‘outside breading’……another topic for another day.

Frankly, it does not bother me regarding other peoples' faiths and beliefs as long as they don't try to force theirs on mine. I don't care who their god is, nor how they practice their religions; just do their thing and let everyone else practice the way they believe without interferring with other's beliefs. Speaking of parroting, "Can't we just all get along?"
